Derry City and Strabane District Council has taken another important step forward in its environmental journey with the successful introduction of reusable cups and glasses at the Guildhall bar.
Moving away from single-use cans and compostable cups, the new reusable system made its debut over the weekend at the sold-out Coronas gig, proving to be an overwhelming success with concertgoers while also significantly reducing the level of waste output at events.Β
The initiative directly supports the Councilβs ongoing sustainability targets, reinforcing both the Guildhallβs position as a forward-thinking civic and cultural centre and the wider Councilβs commitment to reducing carbon footprints and single-use plastics.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Grace UΓ Niallais has welcomed the move. She said:
Council is fully dedicated to protecting the local environment and meeting our ambitious climate goals. Seeing music fans embrace these new reusable cups at the Guildhall during The Coronas gig shows that the local community is right behind us. Every small change adds up, and this initiative proves that large-scale events can be both great fun and environmentally responsible.

This is a fantastic milestone for the Guildhall and a clear demonstration of our commitment to tackling waste at its source. While compostable options like compostable cups were a step forward, a true circular economy relies on keeping items in circulation for as long as possible. The reusable cups are great and easy to use and they prevent thousands of single-use items from entering our system.
